Slowly Sipping Coffee

One year ago today, we discovered FIRE

Here comes the sunA post last month by one of my favorite bloggers Mixing Maroons, got me to thinking about the exact moment I stumbled upon the concept of FIRE.  I mean, I had always toyed with the idea, knowing that we should be able to retire early – as in 55, but I had never considered my early 40s as an option.

So let me set the scene – it was a plain, ordinary Wednesday morning.  I was (slowly) sipping coffee, and obviously perusing the internet in my office as the fluorescent lights flickered overhead.  Work was slow, as it always is in January, with the budgets still being finalized, and everyone still trying  to get their neurons firing at normal speed after the holiday break.

I wish I could remember my original search term.  Probably something innocuous about investing or budgeting – I know for certain I had no clue in my mind about the rabbit hole I was about to travel down…

OMG!!! I am dying reading this blog post by this guy called “Mr Money Mustache”

The last line of this paragraph made me laugh out loud:

You will suddenly be able to fly freely through the world, free from having to work for a living, able to start living life as you choose, doing exotic things like spending time raising your young children, taking a 3-week vacation each month, or just enjoying understated shows of leisure like sweeping your driveway in pajamas at 11am on a sunny Thursday morning.”

I want to do that!!!!

So, that sentence in that email is what lit my FIRE.  Do you remember your moment of inspiration?

Thanks for the mention today! Mr. Maroon had the moment of inspiration. My commitment was more like an evolution as I bought more and more into these CRAZY ideas. And speaking of crazy, I can think of quite a number of things I’d rather do than sweep the driveway, though I do like the pajamas part!

You can’t beat doing chores in pajamas. I think that is what appeals to me – wearing my flannel pants all day!!! (Not every day…of course)

I don’t think there was an exact moment for me, like Mrs. Maroon it was an accumulation of crazy ideas. I definitely get excited everytime I tell someone new that there’s another option besides saving 10% of your income and working forever.

I’ve tried talking to some of my friends about it – but most of them think I’m insane. So, lately, I just keep more mum about it all so I’m not the “crazy cheap lady who works down the hall”

I think the moment for me was also because of Mr Money Mustache! His blog is so inspiring. I’m still in the very beginning stages with trying to figure out our plan. We still have a ways to go.

Yep, I love me some MMM. His blog is super inspiring, even if now some of his ideas are a little bit more extreme than we want to go. Plus, his sense of humor just kills me!

I like that – insane but cool ideas- I am pretty sure Mr SSC thought I was insane too… but maybe he’s been thinking that for years!
